This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Tectonics is not the exposure of a medium’s constructive elements, it is instead the transformation and mutation of these elements toward the production of alternate aesthetic effects. The drawings/paintings shown in this presentation are built out of the vectors that operate behind all digital modeling software. The aesthetics produced are the painterly effects of motion in depth, intensity of luminosity, and the vibration of optical attention. I filmed this video on Father's Day (6/18/17). There was a small part of me that expected the tool section to have some fathers/men in it for the holiday (and there were a few), but this being Sears, it's pretty dead. There are some shelves empty, as you can see. The optical and photography departments have been empty for years. It appears (and I stress appears) that they're getting rid of their mattress/bedding section. I say that because many are on clearance. I use to buy tools here all the time when my dad was alive (and I've bought a few since it's near my house). Many of the items are on clearance sales. They use to sell TVs and stereos and other high dollar electronics years ago, but no more. The only high dollar electronics it appears they have now are washers and dryers a...

Abstract(s): Mr. Pressel’s lecture covers the design and importance of the Hexagon KH-9 Spy satellite that helped keep the peace during the cold war from 1971 to 1986. It was the last film based spy satellite. The program was declassified by the NRO/CIA in 2011.The Hexagon satellite was an invaluable asset providing photographic intelligence information during the cold war. It was responsible for President Nixon signing the SALT treaty and allowed President Reagan to say, “trust but verify.” Mr. Pressel was the project engineer responsible for the design of the f/3 60-inch focal length folded Wright stereo cameras. He will explain how the optical system worked in perfect synchronization with the fast moving film (linearly and in rotation). This satellite was and still is considered the ...
NASA has begun four concept studies of major space observatories that could launch sometime in the coming couple decades. In this fourth in our series on these studies, we discuss the Habitable Exoplanet (HabEx) concept. HabEx is a design for a highly capable observatory with one of the most ambitious and exciting goals: the astronomical search for life-bearing planets in the solar neighborhood. The discovery over the past few years that stars in the Milky Way may each be orbited by at least one planet suggests that among these numerous planetary systems may reside planets similar to Earth and perhaps even harboring life. The HabEx concept is intended to be the astronomical community’s response to an age-old question of humanity, “Are we alone in the cosmos?" Such observations require...
